Upset Meter: Round 1

After an almost upsetless Thursday, Friday certainly made up for it in a BIG way.

A 15 seed had not knocked off a 2 seed in 11 years when Hampton beat Iowa State. Yesterday. Norfolk State broke that streak by beating Final Four favorite Missouri.

A new streak began after that game and lasted about 2 and a half hours. Lehigh took down the Duke Blue Devils later last night. This is the definition of MARCH MADNESS!

Here were the Total Round 1 Upsets:

12 VCU 62 defeats  5 Wichita State 59
11 Colorado 68 defeats 6 UNLV 64
10 Xavier 67 defeats  7 Notre Dame 63
15 Lehigh 75 defeats 2 Duke 70
9 Saint Louis 61 defeats 8 Memphis 54
15 Norfolk State 88 defeats 2 Missouri 86
12 South Florida 58 defeats 5 Temple 44
13 Ohio 65 defeats 4 Michigan 60
11 North Carolina State 79 defeats 6 San Diego State 65
10 Purdue 72 defeats 7 St. Mary's 69

Upset Meter Round 1

I did this the last couple years so here we go.

Let's go through some suprise upsets the first round this year.

Obviously we're going to have to start with #4 Louisville and #13 Morehead State. Who would've guessed? A 3 with the clock winding down, ended Louisville's suprise season. Right after that, #5 Vanderbilt fell to #12 Richmond. But where were the day two upsets everyone was predicting well they didn't come. Wisconsin avoided another upset. Oakland couldn't put down another game against a top team. What about Indiana State and Syracuse, or Utah State and Kansas State? They just didn't pull through this year.

So with out further delay I present to you the Upset Meter Round 1 2011:

#11 Marquette over #6 Xavier
#9 Illinois over #8 UNLV
#12 Richmond over #5 Vanderbilt
#13 Morehead State over #4 Louisville
#11 VCU over #6 Georgetown
#10 Florida State over #7 Texas A&M
#11 Gonzaga over #6 St. John's

That is 7 first round upsets.

Upset Meter Round One

This year we had plenty of Thursday upsets. We had 7 Thursday upsets and 3 Friday upsets.

Round 1 Upsets:
Old Dominion (11) over Notre Dame (6)
Murray State (13) over Vanderbilt (4)
St. Mary's (10) over Richmond (7)
Northern Iowa (9) over UNLV (8)
Washington (11) over Marquette (6)
Ohio (14) over Georgetown (3)
Wake Forest (9) over Texas (8)
Cornell (12) over Temple (5)
Missouri (10) over Clemson (7)
Georgia Tech (10) over Oklahoma State (7)

Last year we also had 10 upsets in the first round. The year before that we had 8.
There were only 1 round 2 upsets last year.

With teams on the rise we could easily see plenty of upsets today and tomorrow.

Will the Upset Meter continue to rise the next two days? We'll see.

Upset Meter (Round 1)

Upset Winners:
Siena (9)
Texas A&M (9)
Michigan (10)
Maryland (10)
Southern California (10)
Dayton (11)
Western Kentucky (12)
Wisconsin (12)
Arizona (12)
Cleveland State (13)

Total: 10

Last years round 1 upsets: 8

Last years total upsets: 13

10 upsets in round one 2 more than last year, and could very well beat last years total upsets today.

Possible upsets in round 2:
Cleveland State over Arizona
Southern California over Michigan State
Purdue over Washington
Michigan over Oklahoma
Arizona State over Syracuse
LSU over North Carolina
Western Kentucky over Gonzaga
Texas over Duke
UCLA over Villanova
Wisconsin over Xavier

Other games i did not mention:

Pitt and OKST: Pitt didn't play well at all on friday, but OKST did. So shouldn't that be a possible upset, yes and no. If Pitt plays their best like i would expect their coach to get them ready. OKST doesn't have a chance. I think after that performance, Pitt will have their wake up call and be playing like their supposed to.

Louisvile: UofL played extremely well coming down the strech last night. They looked like the best team in the country and right now i think they are the best team in the country. Siena is a good team and could be a dark horse to beat them but UofL has to much energy. Siena is still hyped up after that game against Ohio State and will not fare well against UofL on Sunday.

Uconn and TX A&M: Though TX AM can beat good teams. Calhoun is back and Uconn is going to make him feel alot better by destroying TX AM. If Calhoun wasn't playing i think they could've had an off night and not had the energy they can have, they would've been on the Posible upsets list.

Memphis and Maryland: This was the hardest game to choose. I think that this game is going to be on many people's upset watches. But, i think that if Memphis can play their best it will be an easy win over Maryland. Obviously Maryland can beat good teams. I think Maryland is going to have a hard time keeping up with Memphis and their great defense.
