Ranking the Field: 2011 Indianapolis 500

This year is the 100th anniversery of the 1st running of the Indianapolis 500! Today I will be ranking the field 1-33 on the drivers I think have the best chance to win this year's 500.

  1. Scott Dixon – Not starting in 1st, but is a winner here, and probably has the best race car, can’t go wrong with good ol’ chip here.
  2. Alex Tagliani – Has had the fasted car through qualifying, and he is good here too! Had a great car last year too, and it could be his time to break through at Indy.
  3. Dan Wheldon – What was last year the 10th time he’s come in 2nd? All those 2nd places has been overlooking his win here a couple years back. He won here as a Ganassi, 2nd as a Panther, can he do the same with Herta.
  4. Dario Franchitti – Franchitti completely dominated here last year, and could be on the pole, had he not run out of gas in qualifying. It might be his turn to join the 3X winners club.
  5. Helio Castroneves – Are you kidding me? 16th? I don’t buy it, expect him to compete in the end.
  6. Will Power – Could his first oval win be on the biggest one?? Maybe, he has a great team to back him up.
  7. Oriol Servia – He is the sleeper in the championship this year, he won’t be a sleeper in this race, if he keeps it clean, he could take it.
  8. Townsend Bell – It seems like he is up running close every year, I don’t think it’s any coincidence either.
  9. JR Hildebrand – If you’re looking for a “Trevor Bayne” in this field, here’s your guy.
  10. Danica Patrick – She would be in the top 3 if she was starting in the top 10.
  11. Ryan Briscoe – See above.
  12. Ed Carpenter – He is good on the ovals, and this means the world to Sarah Fisher.
  13. Marco Andretti – It is his destiny to win here, just doesn’t have the starting position.
  14. Buddy Rice – I don’t know if he has the car to win, but he’s won here!
  15. Tony Kanaan – He’ll break through here eventually right? He’s running out of years, and he lost the team he had the best chance with.
  16. Vitor Meira – Another sleeper, he road sideways on the wall here a couple years ago.
  17. Paul Tracy – I think that you’ll see a car high on the outside on the first lap, it’ll probably be this car or…
